Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis?

The word endometriosis comes from "Endometrium" which is the inside lining of the uterus. People with endometriosis have those cells outside of the uterus, causing pain and other symptoms.

Symptoms:
  • Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea)
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Infertility
  • Painful bowel movements or urination
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Others:
    • fatigue
    • diarrhea
    • constiparion
    • bloating
    • nausea
    • all hightened during menstral cycle
Causes:
  • During the menstral cycle, endometrial cells go back through the falopian tubes instead of out of the body
  • Endometrial cells may attach to scar tissue, like from a surgery
  • Endometrial cells may travel outside of the uterus into the other parts of the body
Treatments:
  • Pain medication
  • Hormone therapy
  • Conservative surgery (burning off the endometrial cells)
  • In extreme cases, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus, cervix, and ovaries)
Statistics:
  • About 176 million women (10%) are diagnosed with endometriosis worldwide
See your doctor if:
